If you’ve ever seen an old truck sitting dilapidated in a yard, you know the damage that rust can do to metal. This begs the question—if dental implants are made of metal, can they also rust? It’s a question you may be asking yourself if you’re about to go through dental implant surgery, and it could cause second thoughts.

If you want to learn more about corrosion and how it applies to dental implants, continue reading.

Why Does Metal Rust?

Different metals react to oxygen differently. Some metals combust when they oxidize, others will suffer corrosion. Iron is a metal that forms rust (ferrous oxide) when it’s exposed to oxygen and water. This is what causes the red-tinged substance you might see on exposed nails, grills, or old vehicles.

Can Dental Implants Rust?

The vast majority of dental implants are made of titanium, which is not a ferrous metal. This means it has no iron in it to react and rust. Titanium is known for its biocompatibility, strength, and corrosion resistance. This is why it is the go-to material for implants that will be placed in an environment that’s usually moist and exposed to a lot of oxygen (your mouth.)

What Happens to Make Dental Implants Corrode?

While it is incredibly rare, there are ways that dental implants can corrode over a long period of time. There are trace minerals found inside much of the food you eat daily. When these minerals mix with your saliva they can generate microscopic pulses of electricity near your implant.

These microscopic pulses are the source of the corrosion. In a worst-case scenario, it can cause your dental implants to fail. However, the failure rate of corroded implants is incredibly low. Even now, researchers are working on new coatings and materials to help stop this process altogether!

So, now you know that dental implants don’t rust! The use of corrosion-resistant materials like titanium, coupled with good oral hygiene will minimize the chance of corrosion. If you’re about to get dental implant surgery, this should be one less worry on your mind. If you have others, be sure to contact your dentist and talk them through.
